SafeNet Licenses Security Accelerator Intellectual Property to ARM
ARM to Provide Combined Technologies for Use in ARM Core-Based Systems
BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 2002--SafeNet (Nasdaq: SFNT - News),
a leading provider of Internet security technology that is the de
facto standard in the VPN industry, today announced that ARM has
licensed one of SafeNet's security accelerator cores for use in a wide
range of applications. ARM, the industry's leading provider of
16/32-bit RISC microprocessor intellectual property (IP), has licensed
the SafeNet EmbeddedIP(TM)-25 Modular Multiplication and
Exponentiation Accelerator Core (EIP-25), adding the proven security
expertise of SafeNet to their already extensive family of processor
cores.
With more than one billion ARM® core-based processors in use
today, ARM has a large market share in embedded RISC processors
serving industries including automotive, consumer entertainment,
digital imaging, networking, storage, and wireless. ARM will license
the cryptographic acceleration offered by the SafeNet EIP-25 together
with its ARM core to its technology partners for use in a variety of
applications including wireless chipsets and smart cards. By joining
ARM's expertise, immense customer base, and position with SafeNet's
expertise and technology in the security arena, a unique combination
has been created to capture the increasing need for security in
system-on-chip designs.
"ARM's partners are looking for secure processor solutions to
serve the increasing need for ubiquitous security in business and
consumer applications," said Richard York, CPU product manager, ARM.
"The security expertise that SafeNet brings to ARM's portfolio of
licensable IP is beneficial to the ARM partnership in building the
next generation of devices. We have welcomed the opportunity to team
with SafeNet to deliver strong and secure intellectual property to
semiconductor device manufacturers."
The EIP-25 core is suitable for cryptographic applications needing
modular arithmetic and low footprint applications like wireless
application processors and smart cards. SafeNet security IP provides
ARM with a flexible and highly secure processor solution for smart
card system-on-chip (SoC) integration. With its small size and low
power consumption, the EIP-25 meets all of the evolving industry
requirements by performing RSA operations within 100 milliseconds and
with power consumption of only 5 milliamps. The EIP-25 core meets
stringent and certifiable security requirements--a necessity in the
type of applications for which ARM's partners will use the technology.
"It is a strong testimony to the security expertise of SafeNet
that ARM, the world leader in supplying semiconductor IP, has chosen
to distribute our intellectual property to ARM customers," said CJ
Koomen, Chairman, SafeNet Europe. "This relationship gives both
companies a tremendous opportunity in the smart card market."
"We are excited about teaming with ARM to secure e-commerce
through smart card applications," said Anthony Caputo, Chairman and
CEO of SafeNet. "The management and engineering teams of both
companies have worked closely together to create this intellectual
property partnership."
Availability
The EIP-25 is now available to ARM partners for licensing through
ARM with product availability at the end of Q3 2002.
